Kanya King MBE
Kanya King MBE is the visionary founder of leading urban music brand, MOBO.
Kanya King founded the MOBO Awards in 1996, at a time when the Britpop of Pulp, Blur and Oasis had come to define Cool Britannia whereas another kind of British musical creativity was going very much unrepresented.
Now in its 21st year, the MOBO organisation has become so much more than an annual awards ceremony, growing into a year-round, agenda-setting brand that offers training and support to aspiring musicians as well as daily social media support. Last year, King launched the MOBO Movement, which ventures beyond music into film, fashion, performing arts and literature. The aim is to promote change and opportunity in the creative industries to ensure that talent from diverse backgrounds is not being wasted.
King is a board member of the E2E Exchange, a network for entrepreneurs, along with Richard Branson and Duncan Bannatyne. She was appointed MBE in 1999 and has since received many accolades from various influential and prominent bodies such as ‘one of the most influential women in the UK’.
